Audience Research & Target Audience Profile

     To better understand my target audience for my music video package, I conducted a short questionnaire that focuses on media consumption habits, visual preferences, and storytelling styles. This information will help me make creative decisions that ensure that my final outcomes will appeal to the intended audience, as well as to see if the concept I built fits with the user preferences, and if not, I will see what I can and want to adjust. I've sent this Questionnaire to my friends and asked them to complete it.

    The results show that most respondents fall within the 16–25 age range, which makes my target audience teenagers and young adults. Although I initially intended my age range to go from 16 to 30 years old, I reconsidered and decided to make it more specific, therefore I chose to cut it down to the age of 25 instead of 30.

    The gender responses were varied, which could indicate that my project has the potential to appeal to a broad audience rather than being limited to a single gender. The majority of the responses are female, which goes well with my initial intent for the audience, while it still remains open to both genders.

    The vast majority of the applicants stated that they engage with music videos regularly, with many consuming such content daily or several times a week. This suggests to me that my audience is already familiar with these media conventions and has created a set of expectations for such products. This also reinforces the importance of creative and engaging visuals in order to keep the audience engaged and remain competitive in the industry.

    When asked about the type of content that they enjoy most, most respondents selected emotional/reflective/nostalgic content, followed by  fashion/lifestyle, pop/indie music videos and travel/adventure. This strongly supports my creative direction, as my music video is based on emotional storytelling and nostalgia, this helps me ensure my vision is aligned with what the audience wants to see.

    In terms of storytelling, many respondents preferred a fast-paced/ action-focused , and non-linear or impressionistic narratives over slow-paced reflective ones. This may link to how contemporary media consumption has evolved, especially through the use of social media platforms, where content is designed to capture the audience's attention quickly and maintain a high engagement level. As a result, I've decided to adapt my music video by incorporating shorter, faster-paced shots alongside more reflective moments. This balance will allow me to maintain the emotional and nostalgic tone of the narrative that I first intended while also responding to audience expectations for visual stimulation.

    Most participants said that elements such as archive footage, illustrations, and mixed media make content more engaging. Moreover, representation in media was considered important or somewhat important by the majority of respondents. This reinforces my intention to present a layered and emotionally authentic female character, allowing audiences to relate on a personal level.


Target Audience Profile

    Based on this research, I've defined my target audience as:

  • Aged 16–25, for both genders, with an inclination towards females

  • Regular consumers of music videos and magazines

  • People interested in emotional, nostalgic, and reflective content

  • People that are attracted to cinematic visuals, mixed media, and strong aesthetics

  • People that value authenticity, storytelling, and visual coherence
