Narrative Conventions &Constructing my protagonist
Emotional music videos often follow a non-linear or impressionistic narrative, prioritising feelings, memories, or a character’s internal journey rather than a strict chronological storyline. This aligns well with my concept, as I want to explore the female character’s emotional growth and nostalgia through childhood memories and personal experiences. Elements I plan to include:
-Archive footage & home videos (to provide an authentic glimpses into the character’s past, to creating a sense of closeness to the protagonist's narrative)
-Mixed media and illustrations: (to visually communicate emotions and abstract ideas that cannot be captured by the footage alone)
-Mixed media and illustrations: (to visually communicate emotions and abstract ideas that cannot be captured by the footage alone)
-Slow pacing and reflective shots: (to allow the audience to absorb the emotional tone and to put emphasis the character’s introspection)
-Symbolic visual motifs: (colours, props, and locations that reinforce themes of nostalgia, comfort, and self-discovery)
I inspired my choice of non-linear and impressionistic narrative from my previous research: Music Video Analysis (beabadoobee - Glue Song), as it has a non-linear narrative, but it still connects with the topic of the song, and matches the lyrics too.
