The pre-production planning is important for bringing my idea to life because it makes sure that my ideas are organised while still leaving space for creativity and emotional authenticity. As said before, I want my music video to follow a non-linear and impressionistic narative, therefore I decided to devide my planning into two main sections: planned shots and spontaneous shots. This approach reflects the themes of memory and nostalgia which are often fragmented and unpredictable.
Planned Shots
The planned shots are important because they maintain the narrative clarity and visual consistency, as well as the alignment with the song’s emotional beats. These shots will be carefully thought out in advance and will appear at key moments in the music video.
Some examples of planned shots will include:
-
Close-up performance shot of the protagonist to create intimacy and emotional connection
-
Controlled scenes using warm lighting to reinforce comfort and nostalgia
-
Framings that match the storyboard and treatment
-
Shots that will later allow space for mixed media illustrations to be layered in post-production
Planning these shots ensures the visuals remain coherent across the different filming days.
Spontaneous Shots
Alongside the planned shots, there will be spontaneous shots that play an equally important role in my music video. These are unplanned or loosely planned moments captured during filming, daily interactions and day-to-day encounters, allowing for natural movement, genuine emotion, and unpredictability.
Some examples of spontaneous shots would be:
-
Handheld footage captured while walking through the city
-
Natural reactions and unscripted performance moments
-
Observational shots inspired by the environment, lighting, or mood on the day of filming
These shots help preserve a raw and authentic feel, which aligns emotional tone of the song Matilda. They also reflect how memories are often imperfect and fleeting rather than staged or controlled.
Why I think this approach would work
By combining planned and spontaneous shots, I will be able to balance structure and emotion, as this method allows me to stay true to the reflective nature of the music video while also being able to adapt to different locations, weather conditions, and filming days. Overall, this approach supports a more honest representation of the female character’s emotional journey.
