In my music video, I chose to have a very small and flexible crew to ensure that the visual aesthetic is intimate and authentic. I will act as both director and performer, and my friend Antonia will help out as a camera operator on some of the days of filming. I also plan on filming some shots myself using a handheld camera.
This will allow the filming to be very relaxed and natural, which is helpful for my theme of nostalgia and emotional realism. Also, being both in front of and behind the camera will give me complete control over the representation of the female protagonist, making the performance feel more personal and authentic. The handheld camera and spontaneous moments will help me create a documentary-style and nostalgic feel that is similar to how memories are experienced.
In conclusion, this approach is all about being authentic and imperfect, which is helpful for the non-linear narrative and emotional feel of Matilda, and also for the viewer to be able to relate to the protagonist on a personal level.
